When light frost freezes the car windows in the morning, the season is long over for most bikers. Winter is not necessarily the optimal time for a ride on two wheels. When snow is threatening, the bike stays better in the garage. In snow, ice and slippery, riding a motorcycle is just too dangerous. But with cleared roads, with a little preparation and a few tips, a scooter or motorcycle ride in the cold can be fun.
Rule number 1: The technique has to be right
This includes above all the technically perfect condition of the motorcycle. Regular care and freeing of salt, grime and ice during the cold period protects the motorcycle. Best with a hand and a water hose instead of a high-pressure cleaner, because a high-pressure cleaner can drip water drops or chemical cleaners in wheel and steering bearings, in fittings, switches and fuse boxes. This then causes corrosion.
Experts advise to protect metal parts with an appropriate oil and treat painted parts with hard wax. The contact points of the switches need contact spray. Wheel bearing and chain are particularly well greased in winter.

As a tire profile, the ÖAMTC recommends more than the legally prescribed minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimeters. The winter tire requirement for motorcycles is no longer valid. But anyone who drives in winter, should raise the best possible tires with a lot of profile.

Rule number 3: Good light and warm clothes
Of course, it should be for every driver that in the dark season, all electrical signals such as light, horn and turn signals must work properly. Handlebar protectors and heated grips provide effective protection against cold. Warm fingers are an essential part of active safety. With cold fingers, the lever, switch and handlebar can no longer be operated properly. Depending on the design, scooters sometimes provide additional weather protection for the legs through trim parts.
Anyone who lingers in the cold on the motorcycle for hours in the winter wears thick protective clothing for their own convenience. Whether this is a normal summer clothing plus thermal overalls or a special winter combination is up to each driver. Among them is recommended thermal or ski underwear. For drivers with textile suits, a rain suit provides additional protection against cold and moisture.
Rule number 4: The visor requires special attention
A new and scratch-free visor of the helmet prevents stray radiation and glare at low sun and oncoming vehicles in the evening and night hours. Tinted visors have nothing to look for in the winter on the helmet. With a double-walled Pinlock inner visor, which does not fog as fast as coated visors, the view always remains clear. A balaclava with a large chest and neck protection additionally warms the head.
Also important: insulated and waterproof gloves.

Waterproof and lined boots with a high shaft keep feet warm and dry. Rain and wind-resistant overcoat for gloves and boots can be used quickly. Also, steering gloves are useful accessories in winter, as they provide warm hands.
Rule number 5: adapt driving style
No matter if scooter or motorcycle: driving in winter is not without dangers. However, a special preparation is usually not necessary. Of course, motorcyclists must expect in winter with slippery roads and poorer visibility and adjust the driving style – so drive as “round” as possible. This includes without much load changes to drive as well as hard acceleration and strong braking to avoid as far as possible.
Advantage scooters: scooters are usually a bit lower and easier to catch when they slip. There are also winter tires for some models.
Not only the cold and the smoothness make the ride so special in winter. Even the low sun affects the sight and thus driving style of motorcycle or scooter rider. Therefore important: Well visible clothing and functioning lighting.
