Painting, but how?

two motorcycle helmets, one coloured, one white

Which color is allowed on the helmet?

Off the rack to boring for you? There are various ways to differentiate yourself from the masses with an individualized design of the motorcycle helmet. One thing in advance: always hire a professional and do not lend a hand whith your helmet. It’s perfectly permissible to paint the motorcycle helmet – but who wants to have an individual design on the helmet, must resort to special paint or airbrush colors to reshape the helmet. However, you should start immediately, because there are special conditions and also the helmet can lose protection if the paint destroys the plastic. Generally, motorcycle helmets are made of plastic. If solvent from a paint hits it, it may be that the paint becomes brittle. The consequence is that it no longer offers protection in a collision as it should. In order to determine whether the painting of a motorcycle helmet is allowed, you should first ask the motorcycle helmet manufacturer. This can release the helmet for painting or pasting foils. If you want to install a new paint job on the motorcycle helmet, do not lend a hand, but ask a pro. He knows the colors and ingredients and can recommend colors that do not affect the material of the helmet. If necessary, the color expert can also determine whether the material tolerates conventional paints or not.

Foiling instead of painting

If the motorcycle helmet should face a color change, there is a choice between different shades and countless effects. The foling brings not only color changes, but also an additional protection for the paint of the motorcycle helmet. That means scratches or bird droppings can not penetrate to the actual lacquer layer. And the film withstands even smaller stone chips. Paint protection, however, is only one aspect of why one should choose foiling rather than painting when it comes to changing colors or patterns. The actual reason why the foliling of a motorcycle helmet is often chosen is the simple attachment of the film on the helmet. And if the newly chosen color then is no longer liked, the film can be removed at any time. The design requirements are almost unlimited when foiling a motorcycle helmet. Thanks to modern technology, it is possible that any design on the computer can be designed with software and the foil can be printed with this pattern. Thus, animal motifs, but also unusual reliefs or crazy symbols can be printed on the foil. When doing the foiling, however, you should make sure that no blisters arise. Because then the whole effect is gone very quick.
Regardless of whether you are foiling or painting, the general rule is: Never personalize motorcycle helmets yourself.

  • The first look goes into the manual, on the guarantee certificate and the website of the manufacturer.
  • High quality helmets made of fiberglass, carbon or similar material can be painted, if the manufacturer allows that.
  • Always have paint and decals applied by a professional.
