You want to discover Austria with your motorcycle? There are many unique routes in Austria but for curve freaks and altitude enthusiasts come here our suggestions for the best places in Austria.

#3 Villach Alpine Road

Beautiful mountains and breathtaking views! The Villach Alpine Road is located in the heart of the Austrian Alps and leads from Villach-Möltschach directly to the Dobratsch mountain.
On 16.5 kilometres, 7 hairpins, a total of 116 curves and a height of 1200 metres you will be offered the most spectacular views and unique experiences. The mountain road is open all year round and is one of five premium alpine roads in Austria, each one is worth a visit.
Start your journey in Villach-Möltschach, where also the toll station is located, and quickly make your way up a few metres in altitude over several bends before the road opens up a wide view of Villach, the Julian Alps and the Karawanken Mountains.

Tip: Take a short break at the “Aichingerhütte“, enjoy the fantastic panoramic view and get some refreshment to be prepared for the rest of your trip.

“Ruler of the air” – this is the feeling that the street brings every year in the hearts of 5.5 million visitors and once you have been there, it is not difficult to imagine why.

#2: Gerlos Alpine Road

The ride from Mittersill in Salzburg to Zell am Ziller in Tyrol takes about an hour. Be sure to plan more time, because there is a lot to discover along the way. Especially on the 12 km long Gerlos Alpine Road between Krimml and Gerlos. Nine curves with a maximum gradient of 9% lead you to the 1628 meter high pass.
The characteristic style of Franz Wallack, who was the architect of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, has also shaped this route and embeds it neatly into the landscape.
The mountain pass, which is particularly popular with motorcyclists, has been fully open to traffic since 1962.

Tip: Visit the “Wasser Welten Krimml” right at the beginning of the Gerlos Alpine Road. With a drop height of 380 m, the largest waterfalls in Europe can be admired here.

Situated in the extreme west of Pinzgau, part of the province of Salzburg, the mountain road is a very good opportunity to explore the alpine landscape between Krimml and the Tyrolean Zillertal.

#1: Grossglockner High Alpine Road

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is the mother of all Alpine roads in Austria. Its 48 kilometres, 36 hairpin bends and an artistically planned route distinguish it from all other routes and make it one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in Europe. Starting at the foot of the highest mountain in Austria, it takes you up to 2571 metres above sea level to the “Edelweiss” peak.
The highlight of a trip is the “Kaiser-Franz-Josef Höhe” (2369m) high above the Pasterze, one of the longest glacier tongues in the eastern Alps.
On the roadside, along the route, there are fascinating exhibits, theme trails, restaurants, playgrounds and information points about the highly sensitive region and wildlife of the High Alps.
No other road has such elegant curves, such a pleasant gradient and such a beautiful view: motorcycling on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is certainly a very special experience. Special points for motorcyclists, flexible tickets and parking spaces “in the first row” provide a real biker feeling!

Tip: Driving safety training in the shadow of Austria’s highest mountain.

For the trip on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and other Alpine roads, motorcyclists have various tickets at their disposal. Especially popular: the tour ticket consists of one day ticket each for the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Nockalm Road and Gerlos Road and entitles you to purchase a reduced ticket for the Villach Alpine Road which has also made it into our Top 3.
The tour ticket is available at the ticket offices of the individual streets or in advance at a reduced price in the branches of ÖAMTC, ARBÖ and ADAC.

We hope that you will enjoy the stunning scenery with the magnificent mountains, crystal clear lakes and clean air on the best roads in Austria.
